Standards. Integrity. Preservation.

Mission Vision Guiding Principles

To preserve and transmit traditional martial arts
through disciplined, time-tested training.

To uphold mastery above rank,
substance above promotion,
and practical skill above performance.

A national community of martial artists
committed to authenticity, integrity, and excellence.
Where skill is earned through effort, discipline, and understanding —
and recognition follows merit, not ambition.

Skill before title.
Character before authority.
Contribution before recognition.
Standards without politics.
Preservation without dilution.

The Federation does not replace a member’s dojo or lineage.
It honors legitimate advancement and recognizes demonstrated ability and ethical conduct.

Standards of Recognition Ethical Commitment Instructor Expectations

The Federation does not create rank. Rank is conferred by a practitioner’s home system. Federation recognition can be granted when standards are met.

Recognition rests on:
Skill, Character, Contribution, and Integrity.

Paperwork alone is insufficient. Promotions are deliberate and meaningful. Senior status is by review and nomination.

Scarcity preserves value.

All Members and Instructors shall:

Represent rank truthfully.
Reject exploitation of students.
Avoid disparagement of legitimate arts.
Maintain personal training.
Uphold traditional standards.

Those who represent the Federation must demonstrate:

Technical proficiency.
Clarity in teaching.
Practical application.
Understanding of tradition and etiquette.
Commitment to safety and student development.
Continued personal training.

Above all:
Humility. Discipline. Honesty.

Declaration

Traditional martial arts endure
only where standards are guarded and character is visible.

The American Self-Defense Federation exists to preserve both.
